What is lion roar?

Lion roar is the deep and loud vocalization produced by male lions, also known as the king of the jungle. The roar is one of the most recognizable sounds in the animal kingdom, and can be heard from up to 5 miles away. Lions typically roar to communicate with other members of their pack, establish their territory and to attract females. The sound is produced by air passing over the larynx, which vibrates the vocal cords and creates the deep, rumbling noise. Lions have a unique vocal structure that makes their roar different from other big cats like tigers or leopards. Roaring is an important element of lion behavior and is often used to intimidate potential threats, establish authority and warn off rival males.
